Trade has played an important role in Viet Nam’s rapid economic development since the ‘doi moi’ economic reforms were initiated in 1986. These reforms include sustained efforts to integrate the regional and global economies through an ambitious program of trade agreements – within ASEAN, RCEP, the CPTPP and bilateral agreements with Japan, South Korea, the EU and other economies. However, Viet Nam’s liberalization efforts are handicapped by a shortage of experienced negotiators and small negotiating teams. To address this, the Foreign Trade University of Viet Nam has requested assistance in designing a training course and conducting train-the-trainer activities to strengthen and expand the pool of Vietnamese trade negotiators.
